First you need to figure out what you want your tractor to do for you. Do you live on an acreage and how many acres? Does your preference lean toward antique or newer models? With the amount of work you are going to demand out of the tractor will determine size and horsepower. Do you want gas or diesel? Will a Lawn Tractor fill your needs? Pretty much for mowing and not much of anything else. Some of the higher hp models can be used for snow blowing. Property owners that have a larger acreage have 2 choices. Garden Tractor or Compact Tractor. A Garden Tractor is really a Lawn Tractor that is built heavier, and can handle more attachments. Most are shaft driven rather than belt like a Lawn Tractor. For those reasons a Garden Tractor that is well maintained will last several years. To be more versatile, and safe, a compaact is your next choice. They are much heavier, and will have PTO, option of 4wd, and ROPS for better safety. If properly maintained they can last and easy 30 years plus. Before you get sticker shock remember it is a long term commitment. Add up the options you want as well, like a mower, blade, or loader. Once you have them you will see how much easier your work will be.
